What Is Hijama Cupping Therapy?

Hijama is the Arabic term for cupping therapy, a treatment where cups are placed on the skin to create localised suction. It’s one of the oldest documented therapies still practised today, and at Siddiqui Hijama Clinic it’s the core of what Dr. S.H. Siddiqui has practised for over 40 years.

Dry cupping vs. wet cupping

There are two main forms. Dry cupping uses suction alone, left in place for a set number of minutes, and is generally used for muscle tension and circulation. Wet cupping adds a small, controlled skin incision so a small amount of blood is drawn out along with the suction — this is the form most specifically referred to as hijama in Islamic medical tradition.

What a session actually involves

  1. A consultation to understand your condition and medical history
  2. Cups placed on specific points depending on what’s being treated
  3. A set duration, typically 5–15 minutes per placement
  4. Aftercare guidance before you leave

What it’s commonly used for

Patients come to us for back and joint pain, migraines, hair thinning, and general circulation support, among other concerns — see our full list of services. Cupping is not a cure-all, and Dr. Siddiqui will tell you directly if your condition is better suited to a different treatment or a medical referral.
