Strong research for neck pain

Cupping for neck pain, shoulder pain and frozen shoulder

Short answer: neck pain is where cupping has some of its strongest research — a meta-analysis of 18 trials found it reduced neck pain and improved movement. Cups over the upper back, shoulders and the Sunnah point between the shoulders release the tight muscles behind a stiff neck, desk-worker shoulders and the slow-moving frozen shoulder.

  • Stiff neck and cervical tension
  • Shoulder pain and frozen shoulder
  • Tension headaches from the neck

Is this for you?

Patients come to us with

  • A stiff, aching neck from desk work, laptops or phones
  • Cervical stiffness (cervical spondylosis diagnosed by a doctor)
  • Tight, raised shoulders and knots between the shoulder blades
  • Frozen shoulder — pain and limited movement lifting the arm
  • Tension headaches that start in the neck
  • A neck that ‘locks’ after sleeping awkwardly
  • Shoulder strain from the gym, sport or lifting
How it helps

Why cupping works so well for the neck and shoulders

The neck and shoulders hold tension like nowhere else — the trapezius and the muscles between the shoulder blades tighten with every hour of screen time and stress. Cups lift and release these muscles, bring fresh blood into them and ease the pull on the neck. Because the cups sit on the upper back, the neck itself is treated gently and safely.

The narration of Anas (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 2051) records that the Prophet ﷺ was cupped on the sides of the neck and between the shoulders — the same area modern patients bring us for neck pain. See hijama in Islam.

Neck, shoulder and frozen shoulder

Neck pain and stiffness
  • Points: al-kahil, tops of the shoulders, shoulder blades
  • Gentle cups on the sides of the neck if suitable

  • Points: around the shoulder blade and top of the shoulder
  • Dry cupping often with gentle gliding
  • Usually 3–5 sessions
  • Works well with physiotherapy
Frozen shoulder
  • Eases the pain and tightness around the joint
  • Combined with your daily stretching exercises
  • Usually 4–6 sessions, reviewed as you go
  • We never cup on the joint itself

Trusted by elite athletes

Why Olympic athletes use cupping

At the 2016 Rio Olympics, swimmer Michael Phelps — the most decorated Olympian in history — and other athletes competed with the round marks of cupping on their backs and shoulders. Elite athletes and sports physiotherapists around the world use cupping for muscle recovery, tightness and range of movement between hard training sessions.

The same technique is available at our clinic — with a doctor’s assessment first, single-use cups, and a plan built around your body rather than a fixed package.

  • Faster muscle recovery
  • Looser, freer movement
  • Used by Olympic swimmers since Rio 2016

Keep your neck and shoulders free

Cupping releases the tension; small daily habits stop it building back up. Dr. Siddiqui shows you what suits your neck at every visit.

  • Screen at eye level; elbows supported
  • A break every 30–45 minutes
  • Shoulder rolls and gentle neck turns
  • One supportive pillow, not two
  • Warmth on the area the day after cupping

FAQ

Cupping for neck and shoulder pain — your questions

Is cupping good for neck pain?

Yes — a meta-analysis of 18 trials (BMJ Open 2018) found cupping reduced neck pain and improved function. Most patients feel looser the same day.

Can cupping help frozen shoulder?

It eases the pain and tight muscles around the shoulder, which makes your stretching exercises easier. Usually 4–6 sessions alongside exercises.

Is cupping safe on the neck?

Yes, when done gently by a trained hand. Most cups go on the upper back and shoulders; cups on the sides of the neck are used only after examination.

Can cupping help cervical spondylosis?

Cervical spondylosis is among the conditions where reviews found cupping effective, by easing the muscle tension and stiffness that come with it. Bring any X-ray or MRI.

Where are the cups placed for neck pain?

Between the shoulders (al-kahil), the tops of the shoulders and the shoulder blades. See the points chart.

How many sessions do I need?

Usually 3–5 for neck and shoulder pain, 4–6 for frozen shoulder, 1–3 weeks apart.

Will it help headaches from my neck?

Many patients with tension headaches feel relief as the neck and shoulders loosen. See cupping for migraine.

Does it hurt?

It feels like a firm pull; the area may be tender for a day or two.

Can I work at my desk after cupping?

Yes. Avoid the gym and heavy lifting for 48 hours, and take regular breaks.

How much does it cost?

₹200 per cup, consultation free — usually about 5 cups (₹1,000). Price calculator.
